Workbook for Values & Ethics in Education

Reissued electronically ©2010 NewFoundations

This manual presents theory, examples, and practical cases for analysis and discussion on the nature of values and ethical decision. Self- and schooling priorities are examined through matrices and questionnaires. Costs, benefits and the constellations of principles that determine them are investigated. Rhetorical vs. analytical language is examined as to how it affects moral decision.

This manual was developed over ten years and used in a course which examines in detail how one justifies ethical choices and the nature of controversy resulting from differences in ethical perspective. It examines the role of education in relating values to behavior, and of personal choice to social choice. It looks at policies that purport to pursue various educational values, the conceptions of justice underlying them and their relationship to both the mechanisms and actualities of benefit-cost distributions in our society.
