SCHOOL & SOCIETY: A Systemic View

Reissued electronically ©2010 NewFoundations

An informal social foundations of education text offering a compact overview of the interaction between educational and other institutions. Education is an interrelated and interdependent process involving the individual, his or her family, peers, schooling and a variety of other cultural and sub-cultural elements. This systemic quality helps to explain why attempts to use schooling to solve the nation's most persistent social ills often fall short. Non-school factors keep getting in the way. Nevertheless, research indicates that there are things that educators can do to make schools more effective.
