Those interested in the visual media -- whether they are teachers; librarians; film, radio, and television personnel; film buffs; or researchers -- are constantly searching for the sources for films seen in theaters and on television and videotape.

Many times a plot seems familiar, but the producer has managed to disguise it so that there seems no way to discover from what it was adapted and how many times the plot has been used. The need to know this information usually leads the searcher to the library. This publication is the only known book that brings all this material together.

By gathering like contents together, this book allows the searcher to choose the best version of a film for a specific purpose and provides "tips" to find further information on related film materials. Every attempt has been made to bring like titles together, but there is bound to be much controversy over this book's contents, since the accent has been put on the basic source. For instance, ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE, FUNNY GIRL, and FUNNY LADY are all films based on various aspects of the career of entertainer Fanny Brice. The objective in this volume is simply to bring all films and television programs on Fanny Brice together under one heading.

Since the second edition of this reference book is much larger than the first, only basic information can be given. For additional information on the films listed in this publication, reviews and other discussions can be located through Media Review Digest and film literature indexes.
